Forcing a refresh will update the movie image and description while a scan will update the movies itself. Refreshes are for metadata and scans are for media. Scans and refreshes are considered different things in Plex and it is useful to know which is which. Follow this formatting exactly and your media should always show up. Make an appropriate folder and put your media in that, such as D:/Movies. This page on the Plex website describes exactly how to name your movies, TV shows, music and anything else you want to add to your server. Do not use the root of your drive as a folder location. If media isn’t showing up this is usually the first thing to check. While it can work with media that doesn’t conform to these conventions, it isn’t guaranteed. Plex is very picky about naming conventions. But what if you have added content to the correct library folder on your computer, performed a scan and it doesn’t show up? Most often this is down to incorrect formatting. You perform these scans and refresh steps in Plex to have media and its metadata populate so you can watch your content. Check the box next to Update my library periodically. You can set this to scan at set times between 15 minutes and 24 hours. You have a third option should you want it. Check the box next to Update my library automatically.Select the Server tab and Library on the left.Do the files it doesn't recognize have anything in common vs the ones it does recognize having anything in common as well? Have you tried creating a movie folder on another hard drive and testing one of the movies it doesn't recognize that way. I am just grasping at anything and everything. I know Plex has no issues with MKV files and I have several myself, but maybe you could try adding different copies of the same movie to the folder. I would definitely try removing the folder from your Plex library, refreshing to make all of the movies under that folder disappear and then adding the folder pathway back and scanning again. I guess you could still go under the folder settings and just enable every type of sharing or security option there is? IDK. Seems like if some work then the permissions should be fine. Seems strange to find only some of the files and not others if the process can see it. I can remove all of the other information and see if that helps. Each movie has its own folder in the 'movies' folder. If you happen to have a media file that is named wrongly it either wont. Here is an example of how my files are currently named. For those that arent familiar with it, Plex REQUIRES a particular filename format. To answer your question, you are correct - the movies don't show up in Plex at all. I will also rename simply as you have done. I'm sure there is the possibility of still having associated data in there which could still give me trouble, so I will try it again using your suggestion. Mine is set to update when there are changes to the folder, so I assumed that was happening. When I rebuilt the library I removed the files to a different location and noticed in Plex that all of movies were removed from the library. I thought I'd post here because I know there are many users and not sure they'd welcome another post on an issue that has multiple posts. I never bothered putting the IMDB numbers in my titles either until recently and it seemed to identify movies better so I thought this was a plus.
